Application Server
The heart of SP. It provides an object-
oriented framework for the SCADA Runtime. The objects are developed, instanciated under a Model, then deployed to machines running AppServers, all from the IDE.
Galaxy Repository
This is a Microsoft SQL Database that holds just the configuration of your Galaxies aka Projects. For example, the configuration of the object templates. This allows for collaborative work from the IDE, without conflicts.
OMI
The Operations Management Interface is an advanced Graphical Platform that allows the system to deliver dynamic graphical content to the operators, based on the model of object instances created in the IDE.
AVEVA Historian
Though offered as part of the System Platform bundle and with very tight integration, AVEVA Historian is a real-time database that can be used as standalone solution with other SCADA.

A bit about templates
A template or object can represent anything and contain all configuration, even PDFs.
Templates may hold other templates inside them, such that you could represent a more complex equipment, to a Line or even a whole Plant if you wish.
You should consider deriving a simpler template into more complex ones; all attributes are inherited and changes at parent level are propagated.
Then create as many instances as you need, ordered in a hierarchical order, to represent the real world. We call this the Model.
Symbols can be given a Type; then the visual application is separated in Panes which also get a Type. As the operator navigates in the application, content is shown automatically in the corresponding Pane; if there is no symbol to show, then the Pane is hidden.
Licensing
Perpetual licensing options includes predefined bundles with specific number of tags for Application Server as well as AVEVA Historian.
Alternatively, subscription based Flex licensing offers greater flexibility and possibility to customize the bundle components based on your specific needs. More info.
